Woman in wheelchair struck by SUV in Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, NY — State Police are searching for a black SUV that struck a woman in a motorized wheelchair and fled the scene Feb. 12, 2026.

Troopers responded to Ampersand Drive at approximately 5:42 p.m. for a report of a vehicle-pedestrian collision.

A preliminary investigation determined that a black SUV of unknown make and model—possibly a Jeep Patriot—was stopped near a crosswalk when the woman was traveling southbound on Ampersand Drive in her motorized wheelchair.

The SUV began moving northbound and struck her before continuing northbound on Ampersand Drive without stopping.

Concerned citizens immediately stopped to render aid.

Local fire and rescue personnel responded to the scene, and the victim was transported to Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital before being transferred to University of Vermont Medical Center.

She is currently listed in stable but critical condition.

The suspect vehicle is described as a black SUV of unknown make and model, possibly a Jeep Patriot.

Police believe the vehicle may have sustained front-end damage, specifically to the front passenger-side bumper, consistent with striking the victim’s motorized wheelchair.
