TOWN OF ULSTER, NY — A Brooklyn driver crashed into a furniture store after attempting to avoid a collision on Route 28 on Feb. 1, 2026.
Ulster County 911 dispatched police, fire and EMS to Wiedy’s Furniture Center at 504 Route 28 at approximately 12:23 p.m. for a car versus building motor vehicle accident.
Dispatchers received numerous calls reporting a partial building collapse.
Ulster Police units arrived and located a 2026 Hyundai Tucson that had collided into the Wiedy’s Furniture building.
The building sustained significant structural damage but was not occupied at the time of the collision as the business was closed.
All four occupants of the vehicle were outside of the vehicle when police arrived.
They were evaluated by Empress EMS and refused further medical attention.
The operator of the vehicle was identified as Karen Yinkam Ng, 26, of Brooklyn, New York.
Ng was traveling eastbound on Route 28 and was unfamiliar with the area, according to police.
She attempted to make a left turn into the Wiedy’s Furniture parking lot.
As Ng began making the left turn, she failed to observe an unrelated vehicle traveling westbound on State Route 28.
In an attempt to avoid the collision, Ng rapidly accelerated her vehicle and subsequently lost control.
Upon entering the parking lot, the vehicle struck a snowbank and then continued on, striking the Wiedy’s Furniture building.
Ng was issued two Uniformed Traffic Tickets for failure to yield the right of way and speed unreasonable and prudent.
Ulster Police were assisted at the scene by the New York State Police, Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, Ulster Hose Fire Company, Empress EMS and the Town of Ulster Building Department.
