Driver arrested on DWI charge in Conesville

CONESVILLE, NY — A 21-year-old man was arrested on drunken driving and weapons charges after his vehicle went off the road Wednesday evening.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to Potter Mountain Road at approximately 6:39 p.m. for a report of a vehicle off the road.

While interviewing the operator of the vehicle, deputies observed signs of impairment.

The driver was arrested for driving while intoxicated and transported to the Sheriff’s Office for processing, where he produced a .13% blood alcohol content.

While the vehicle was being removed from the accident scene, deputies located a loaded hunting rifle and an unregistered pistol.

The driver was identified as Peter W. DeWitt, 21, of Conesville.

DeWitt was charged with driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated with a BAC of .08 or greater, criminal possession of a firearm, failure to safely secure rifles, shotguns and firearms in the first degree, and numerous vehicle and traffic offenses.

DeWitt was released on appearance tickets to appear in court at a later date.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Police.
