Two-car collision on I-87 in Esopus

ESOPUS, NY — A 60-year-old man died following a two-car collision on the New York State Thruway on Monday morning.

Troopers from the New York State Police Thruway Kingston barracks responded to the crash on I-87 northbound near milepost marker 80.7 at approximately 11:15 a.m.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2021 Mercedes-Benz traveling northbound in the left lane struck a stopped 2003 Freightliner construction vehicle.

The Freightliner was positioned straddling the left shoulder and partially in the left lane as part of a construction operation.

It was one of several construction vehicles in place to divert traffic from the left lane to the right lane while a crew installed construction signage.

The operator of the Mercedes-Benz, identified as David Moyal, 60, of Kingston, was transported to Kingston Health Alliance Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

The construction worker seated in the Freightliner was not injured.

The investigation remains ongoing.
