MENDHAM TOWNSHIP, NJ — Two men were arrested early Dec. 7 after a police chase ended with a crash into a home and a foot pursuit.

Officer Sean Rice observed a vehicle with an altered license plate in the early morning hours.

The vehicle accelerated and attempted to elude police when Rice attempted a traffic stop.

The suspect vehicle drove into a driveway at the end of Thackery Lane, striking a parked vehicle and part of a house.

The driver fled on foot but was apprehended by Rice after a short foot pursuit.

The passenger also attempted to flee but was unsuccessful.

The driver, Matthew Gehring of Sayreville, and passenger Justin Nowicki of Sayreville, were found in possession of crack pipes.

Officers located a safe, burglary tools and cash scattered around the scene and in the vehicle.

The vehicle was stolen.

The items tied the suspects to a burglary at the Delta Gas Station in Chester Township that occurred just prior to the traffic stop.

Gehring and Nowicki were charged with possession of stolen property, eluding police, possession of drug paraphernalia, obstruction of law and criminal mischief.

Both were lodged at the Morris County Correctional Facility.

The Morris County Sheriff’s Office, Mendham Borough Police and Chester Police assisted during the incident.
