Bank robbery suspect arrested in Meriden

MIDDLETOWN, CT — Police arrested a man in connection with a bank robbery following an hourslong standoff at a Meriden hotel.

Officers responded to Liberty Bank at 460 South Main Street at approximately 9:19 a.m. on Nov. 1 for a report of a robbery.

Witnesses told officers a white male walked into the bank and implied that he had a weapon.

Employees complied with the suspect’s demands for money and he left with an undetermined amount of cash.

Detectives from the department’s Major Investigations Unit developed Bruce Vaughan, 61, of Middletown, as the sole suspect in the incident.

Vaughan was located at a hotel in Meriden at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 5.

Middletown Police and Meriden Police personnel negotiated with Vaughan until approximately 8 a.m. when he surrendered and was taken into custody without incident.

Vaughan was charged with robbery in the first degree, larceny in the third degree and threatening in the second degree.

He was also charged with two counts of violation of probation and held on a total of $225,000 in bonds pending his arraignment in Middlesex Superior Court on Nov. 6.

Vaughan has two prior convictions in Connecticut for robbery in the second degree and was on probation at the time of this incident.
