Kite surfer search proves unfounded in Berkeley Township

BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, NJ — Police responded to a report of a kite surfer in distress off the coast on Oct. 19.

A witness reported observing a kite surfer approximately one mile from shore near 21st Avenue and the ocean who went under the water and did not resurface.

The Berkeley Township Police Department requested assistance from multiple agencies, including the United States Coast Guard, New Jersey State Police Marine Unit, Seaside Park Water Rescue, Seaside Heights Water Rescue, Ocean County Sheriff’s Department and Seaside Park Police Department.

Investigators used numerous methods to attempt to identify a potential victim.

During the investigation, authorities learned that a group of kite surfers had been traveling north from Island Beach State Park.

One of the kite surfers in the group had a black and white sail matching the witness’s description.

Police made contact with the group in Deal in Monmouth County and confirmed all surfers were accounted for.
