COLEBROOK — A 41-year-old Canaan man was arrested on multiple charges including drug possession and driving after suspension following a traffic stop on Route 26 on Aug. 13.
Shawn Sweatt was taken into custody at 6:38 p.m. after a Colebrook police officer stopped a silver Mazda that he recognized as belonging to Sweatt, according to police.
The officer knew Sweatt’s registration and operating privileges were suspended for default payment, police said.
After identifying Sweatt as the driver, the officer informed him he was under arrest and ordered him to exit the vehicle.
Police said Sweatt and a passenger became increasingly hostile and refused multiple lawful orders to exit.
The officer attempted to remove Sweatt forcefully, and when Sweatt pulled away, the officer drew his Taser and was able to get him out without further escalation, according to police.
An open container of alcohol was discovered on the passenger as she exited the vehicle, police said.
During an inventory search of the vehicle before it was towed, the officer discovered a glass pipe with residue consistent with methamphetamine and/or crack cocaine in the driver’s door, according to police.
The vehicle was sealed and seized pending a search warrant, which was granted several hours later.
A subsequent search revealed the presence of another controlled drug believed to be THC wax, police said.
Sweatt was charged with driving after suspension (subsequent offense), possession of controlled drug, transporting drugs in a motor vehicle, unsafe tires, contempt of court, open container of alcohol and suspension of vehicle registration.
He was held on $2,500 cash bail and transported to the Coos County Jail to await arraignment.
