BANGOR — The Bangor Police Department has arrested a suspect in connection with an assault that occurred outside U.S. Congressman Jared Golden’s office.
The incident was captured on video and shared widely on social media.
Police said officers were able to identify the male suspect after viewing the recording and made an arrest.
The department addressed questions from social media users who asked why police were not present during the assault.
“While it’s clear to us that the cops were not there, since no Bangor Police Officers are visible, we do understand why someone might think we should have been,” police said in a statement.
Officers said they would have preferred to interrupt the crime before it occurred but noted that investigation is required before making arrests.
The suspect was identified as Sharp, though police did not provide his first name.
Police encouraged the public to share video evidence of crimes with the department before posting on social media.
“If you possess video of crimes in progress, please consider sharing it with us, even before they make it into the social media landscape,” the department said.
