WEST HAVEN — A New Haven man was arrested Friday after police discovered an illegal firearm during a routine traffic stop.

At approximately 10:30 a.m. on May 23, a West Haven police officer pulled over a Chevy Silverado on Elm Street after noticing it displayed license plates that did not belong to the vehicle.

The driver, identified as Jose Perez-Dominguez, 45, of New Haven, was unable to provide valid registration or insurance documentation.

Officers determined Perez-Dominguez was operating the vehicle with a suspended driver’s license.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle, police discovered a concealed Smith & Wesson .38 Special revolver with an obliterated serial number.

Police also found 100 rounds of .38-caliber ammunition and shotgun shells in the vehicle.

Perez-Dominguez was taken into custody without incident and transported to the West Haven Police Department.

He faces multiple charges including possession of a weapon with an obliterated serial number, illegal possession of a firearm, driving with a suspended license, misuse of registration plates, and operating an unregistered motor vehicle.

Perez-Dominguez is being held on bond and is scheduled to appear in Milford Superior Court next week.
