Boat operator arrested after collision in Sag Harbor

SAG HARBOR, NY — A Southampton man faces multiple charges after a boat he was operating struck a stone jetty in Sag Harbor Bay, seriously injuring two passengers.

Peter Mangiameli, 57, of Southampton, was operating a 2023 35-foot cruise boat from Sag Harbor Bay into the harbor when the vessel struck the jetty at approximately 10:07 p.m. on July 5.

There were eight passengers aboard the vessel and two sustained injuries.

After the collision, Mangiameli docked the vessel at a local dock where officers from the Sag Harbor Village Police Department responded and rendered assistance.

Mangiameli left the scene while the injured passengers were receiving medical treatment.

The two passengers who sustained serious physical injuries were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Their injuries included a broken rib, leg fracture and vertebrae fracture.

The Sag Harbor Village Police Department requested the assistance of the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation on July 6.

Following the preliminary investigation, the New York State Police adopted the case.

Mangiameli was arrested and charged with reckless operation of a vessel, unreasonable speed; vessel operator fails to report accident, personal injury; vessel operator fails to provide ID, personal injury accident; assault in the third degree, recklessly cause physical injury; assault in the second degree, recklessly cause serious physical injury; reckless endangerment in the second degree; and multiple violations of the New York State Navigation Law.

The investigation remains ongoing.
