Troopers responded to the Walmart at 760 Hoosick Road at about 9:35 a.m. for a report of a theft involving multiple offenders, one of whom was armed with a large, bladed weapon.
The investigation determined that two 13-year-olds and a 14-year-old entered the store together.
The 14-year-old took a machete that was for sale and concealed it inside their pants, according to police.
One of the 13-year-olds and the 14-year-old then approached an elderly customer and jostled them while the 14-year-old stole the wallet from the victim’s back pocket, police said.
The victim chased the juveniles and recovered their wallet.
Surveillance footage showed the machete was never displayed during the incident.
All three juveniles fled following the attempted theft.
The involved 13-year-old was taken into custody walking nearby.
The 14-year-old was later located with assistance from the Troop G Community Stabilization Unit, walking in the 600 block of Hoosick Street.
The remaining 13-year-old, who was not directly involved in the theft, was located with assistance from the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office during a traffic stop nearby and was determined to have an active warrant.
No one was injured during the incident.
All three juveniles were transported to State Police Brunswick for processing.
The 13-year-old involved in the theft was issued an appearance ticket returnable to Rensselaer County Family Court and released to their guardian.
The 14-year-old and the other 13-year-old were transported to the Capital District Secure Juvenile Detention Facility due to active arrest warrants related to Rensselaer County Probation violations.
