Inmate dies at Penobscot County Jail

BANGOR, ME — An inmate died at the Penobscot County Jail on Saturday evening after being found unresponsive during a routine check.

Correctional officers discovered the individual unresponsive at approximately 9:35 p.m., according to a media release from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office.

The inmate had been arrested by Bangor Police following an incident in Bangor at approximately 11:50 a.m. Saturday and was transported to the jail.

Upon arrival, the individual was screened by medical staff and completed the standard intake process.

The individual was unable to post bail and remained in custody.

After several hours, the individual was assigned to a housing cell and continued to communicate with correctional staff without incident.

Correctional and medical staff immediately initiated lifesaving measures when the inmate was found unresponsive and were assisted by Bangor Ambulance personnel upon their arrival.

Despite these efforts, the individual could not be resuscitated and was pronounced deceased.

The Bangor Police Department responded and conducted an investigation.

The Maine Department of Corrections and the Maine Office of Chief Medical Examiner were also notified.

During the individual’s time at the jail, there were no reported altercations involving staff or other inmates.

Preliminary information indicates the individual suffered a medical event; however, the official cause and manner of death remain under investigation.

The individual’s identity will not be released pending notification of next of kin.
