BINGHAMTON, NY — A Troy man wanted in a shooting investigation was taken into custody Wednesday after his vehicle was detected by a license plate reader in Binghamton, the Broome County Sheriff’s Office said.
Local law enforcement received an attempt-to-locate bulletin from the Watervliet Police Department at about 3 p.m. regarding a possibly armed male suspect and a vehicle sought in connection with a shooting investigation in Watervliet, authorities said.
At 3:37 p.m., the vehicle triggered a Flock license plate reader in the First Ward area of Binghamton, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Broome County Sheriff’s Strategic Response Group responded and located the vehicle within five minutes on Main Street before conducting a traffic stop, authorities said.
The vehicle had pulled into the drive-thru lane of a McDonald’s on Main Street when the stop was initiated, according to the sheriff’s office.
Because of the nature of the alert, deputies used tactics associated with high-risk traffic stops, authorities said.
The suspect, who was seated in the front passenger seat, was positively identified and taken into custody without incident, according to the sheriff’s office.
Members of the Watervliet Police Department took custody of the suspect later that afternoon, and he was returned to Watervliet to face charges related to the shooting investigation, authorities said.
The Strategic Response Group was assisted by Broome County Sheriff’s Office road patrol deputies, Binghamton police and New York State Police, the sheriff’s office said.
