GRANVILLE, NY — A man was arrested Tuesday after an investigation determined he removed a state-issued GPS monitoring device, according to Sheriff Jeffrey J. Murphy.
Walter M. Winchell, 51, of Granville, New York, was taken into custody May 19 after investigators determined he had removed a GPS monitoring device assigned to him by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision as part of his supervision conditions.
The investigation was conducted by Sgt. E. Macura and Senior Investigator H. Spiezio with assistance from New York State DOCCS.
Investigators determined Winchell removed the device Sunday on Guilder Hollow Road in the Town of Granville.
Winchell was charged with tampering with physical evidence, a class E felony, obstructing governmental administration in the second degree, a class A misdemeanor, and criminal mischief in the fourth degree, a class A misdemeanor.
Winchell was arraigned through centralized arraignment May 19 and is currently lodged at the Washington County Jail under the custody of New York State DOCCS.
