TEWKSBURY, MA — Tewksbury Police Chief Ryan Columbus announced Thursday that less-lethal tools have been restored for use at Tewksbury State Hospital.
The tools include handcuffs, pepper gel and batons.
Columbus said the restoration is an important step toward improving safety for staff, first responders, patients and the surrounding community.
He thanked Secretary of Public Safety Gina Kwon for her leadership and commitment to ensuring public safety remains a priority.
Columbus said significant work remains to ensure safety at the facility.
He noted that prisoner transport vehicles regularly drop off and pick up individuals involved in the criminal justice system at the hospital.
The chief said there are still areas in the hospital where the Department of Mental Health is not permitting the use of the less-lethal tools.
Columbus said ongoing discussions will continue as officials work toward policies that balance therapeutic goals with safety and security needs.
