Man arrested on arson charges in Freeport

FREEPORT, NY — A Baldwin man has been arrested in connection with multiple vehicle fires, including an incident early Sunday morning at a municipal parking lot.

Elder Lopez Avalos, 27, of Baldwin, was taken into custody after officers responded to a call for multiple vehicles on fire at Municipal Parking Field 1 near 32 Smith Street at 1:30 a.m. on May 10, 2026.

Officers arriving at the scene found several vehicles engulfed in flames.

Arson Bomb Squad detectives determined Avalos was responsible for starting the fire and observed him a short distance from the scene.

He was placed into custody without incident.

Detectives also determined Avalos was responsible for setting previous vehicle fires on May 2, 2026, June 18 and June 29 in Freeport.

Avalos has been charged with six counts of arson in the third degree and arson in the fourth degree.
