LAWRENCE, MA — Police deployed additional officers over the weekend to prevent illegal all-terrain vehicle and dirt bike activity on city streets.

The Lawrence Police Department used advance intelligence and coordinated planning to position personnel throughout the city.

Officers utilized a visible enforcement strategy designed to discourage unlawful activity and respond quickly to incidents involving large groups.

The proactive efforts prevented any major roadway incidents related to illegal ATV and dirt bike activity in Lawrence over the weekend, police said.

Neighboring communities experienced multiple incidents involving illegal dirt bikes and ATVs during the same period.

Many operators traveled in large groups, creating hazardous conditions for motorists, pedestrians and riders while disrupting normal traffic flow, according to police.

The department is working with regional law enforcement partners to address the issue affecting communities across Massachusetts.

Illegal off-road vehicles, including dirt bikes and ATVs, are prohibited from operating on public roadways.

Officers will continue to enforce traffic laws and pursue violations, police said.

Residents with information regarding illegal dirt bike or ATV activity, including storage locations, are encouraged to contact Sgt. Angel Lopez of the Traffic Unit at 978-794-5900 Ext. 580 or by email at [email protected].
