SPRINGFIELD, MA — Members of the Springfield Police Department seized two illegal dirt bikes and arrested one rider during an Off-Highway-Vehicle enforcement detail Thursday.
The detail also resulted in criminal complaints being issued to a dirt bike rider and an unregistered motorcycle rider.
Officers conduct these details to deter the illegal riding of dirt bikes and other off-highway vehicles, which are illegal on any city street and have led to serious injuries and deaths to numerous riders.
Some riders are also known to drive recklessly, putting pedestrians and other vehicular traffic in danger.
On Thursday afternoon, officers conducted a traffic stop of a dirt bike rider on White Street near Allen Street.
The adult male rider was issued a criminal complaint and the dirt bike was towed.
Officers also encountered a female motorcycle rider who sped away from officers.
Officers have had previous encounters with her and are aware the motorcycle is unregistered and she is unlicensed.
The rider will be issued a criminal complaint.
A short time later, officers observed a dirt bike rider on Freeman Street.
The rider, later identified as Davien Arroyo, 25, of Springfield, attempted to elude officers, but his bike stalled.
Officers placed Arroyo under arrest on the 0-100 block of Hamlet Street.
Arroyo is charged with operating a snow/recreational vehicle on a public way, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, unregistered motor vehicle, uninsured motor vehicle, failure to stop for police and snow/recreational vehicle helmet violation.
