BINGHAMTON, NY — A New Jersey man wanted for assaulting a police officer was arrested after leading deputies on a high-speed chase through the city in a stolen vehicle.

Sayquan McKenzie, 34, of Camden, New Jersey, was taken into custody on April 28 after fleeing from a traffic stop and crashing on railroad tracks.

Members of the Broome County Sheriff’s Strategic Response Group observed a black Porsche SUV make an illegal turn from the center lane on Main Street around 10:07 p.m.

The vehicle’s Georgia license plate was not registered in the national DMV database.

When deputies attempted a traffic stop on Jarvis Street, the driver sped off, leading them on a pursuit through the city.

The vehicle maneuvered through parking lots of a Popeyes and Citgo on Main Street, reaching speeds exceeding 70 mph while passing other vehicles.

Deputies deployed stop sticks, deflating some of the SUV’s tires.

The vehicle turned onto Chenango Street, then Eldridge Street before entering a parking lot that accessed railroad tracks.

The SUV traveled a short distance on the tracks before striking an object and becoming disabled.

McKenzie exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

Deputies pursued him until he jumped over a concrete wall and fence, landing in dense vegetation and sustaining a head injury.

He was taken into custody and transported to Wilson Hospital for treatment of a head laceration.

McKenzie initially provided a false name to conceal his identity.

The 2017 Porsche SUV was listed as stolen out of South Plainfield, New Jersey.

McKenzie had an active arrest warrant from NYPD for assault on a police officer in the second degree, a class D felony.

A Mississippi license plate found in the SUV was linked to a robbery at a 7-Eleven in Fort Lee, New Jersey, on April 27.

Video footage from Fort Lee police verified McKenzie was the individual who committed the robbery.

McKenzie was charged with criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth degree, unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle in the third degree, obstructing governmental administration in the second degree, false personation, reckless endangerment in the second degree, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the second degree, reckless driving and multiple traffic violations.

He was arraigned and remanded without bail.

McKenzie will be extradited to answer for his outstanding NYPD warrant and charges related to the New Jersey robbery.
