HATFIELD, PA — Police are warning residents about a text message scam falsely claiming to be from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
The Hatfield Police Department said the fraudulent messages often claim recipients owe money for a traffic violation or toll.
The texts threaten license suspension, registration suspension or legal action and urge recipients to click a link and make immediate payment.
Police said the messages are a scam and residents should not click the links.
According to state officials, PennDOT does not send text messages regarding violations, fines or payments.
All official communication is sent through U.S. Mail.
The phishing texts are designed to create urgency and trick recipients into providing personal or financial information.
Police advise residents who receive the messages not to click any links or provide personal or payment information.
Recipients should delete the message immediately and report it as spam.
