Convicted felon arrested on weapons charges in Branford

BRANFORD, CT — A convicted felon was arrested after federal agents intercepted a package containing a firearm suppressor shipped from China to his residence, police said.

Alexander Oranzo, 46, of Branford, was taken into custody April 21, 2026, following a controlled delivery and search warrant execution at his North Main Street home.

The Department of Homeland Security Investigations notified Branford police that day after discovering the suspicious package at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The package, declared as an automotive fuel filter, contained a firearm suppressor and was addressed to Oranzo, who is prohibited from possessing such items due to his felony conviction.

Branford police conducted a controlled delivery of the package to Oranzo’s residence and executed a search warrant after he accepted it.

Officers seized 39 firearms, including three assault weapons, 28 long guns and eight handguns, one of which was confirmed stolen.

Police also recovered five suppressors, 58 high-capacity magazines, three sets of body armor and several thousand rounds of ammunition.

Detectives found approximately eight ounces of marijuana, quantities of Alprazolam and Methadone, materials consistent with ammunition manufacturing and a large quantity of Tannerite.

The New Haven Police Bomb Squad safely removed the Tannerite.

Oranzo was charged with 39 counts of criminal possession of a firearm, three counts of criminal possession of body armor, 58 counts of possession of high capacity magazines, two counts of unsafe storage of firearms, five counts of criminal possession of a silencer, three counts of possession of an assault weapon, one count of possession of a stolen firearm, eight counts of criminal possession of a pistol or revolver, one count of possession of a sawed-off shotgun, two counts of possession of narcotics not in original container, one count of possession of a controlled substance and one count of possession of over five ounces of marijuana.

He was held on $200,000 bond pending arraignment.
