NEWARK, NJ — Police arrested a Newark man in connection with two robberies, one involving a sexual assault, on Saturday, July 11.
Faheem Green, 25, of Newark, faces charges including robbery, aggravated sexual assault, aggravated assault, attempted murder and criminal restraint, Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr., said.
“I commend our Major Crimes detectives for their diligence in identifying and apprehending this suspect on the same day that these incidents occurred,” Miranda said. “Every Newark resident and visitor can feel safer due to this suspect being off our streets.”
At approximately 7:30 a.m., police responded to Orange Street near South 11th Street on a report of a robbery.
A nun was walking southbound on South 11th Street when a male struck her with a closed fist, causing her to fall to the ground, police said.
The suspect fled with the victim’s purse, police said.
She was transported to University Hospital and is in stable condition.
At approximately 8 a.m., a second woman reported that after she exited a bus at Hudson Street near Central Avenue, a man brandished a handgun and demanded her purse, police said.
After the victim handed over her belongings, the suspect struck her in the face with the handgun, pushed her to the ground and applied pressure to her neck until she lost consciousness, police said.
Upon regaining consciousness, the victim discovered she had been raped, police said.
She was transported to University Hospital and is in stable condition.
Detectives identified Green as a suspect after reviewing surveillance footage from both locations, police said.
These charges are merely accusations. The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
