SOUTHEAST, NY — A traffic stop on Interstate 84 led to the arrest of a New Jersey man on felony weapons charges July 10.

Troopers with the Troop K Community Stabilization Unit stopped a vehicle traveling eastbound on the highway at about 10 p.m. for violations of state vehicle and traffic law.

The driver, Bienvenido R. Nunez Jr., 48, of Edison, New Jersey, and a 36-year-old female passenger did not possess valid driver’s licenses, authorities said.

During an inventory of the vehicle before it was impounded, troopers found a loaded privately made .40-caliber handgun.

Nunez admitted ownership of the firearm, police said.

He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, a Class C felony, and criminal possession of a firearm, a Class E felony.

Nunez was arraigned in the Town of Kent Court and remanded without bail to the Putnam County Correctional Facility.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 16 at 1 p.m. in the Town of Southeast Court.
