WEST CARTHAGE, NY — A 20-year-old employee of Johnson Corner Mart was arrested July 8 and charged with unlawfully dealing with a child in the first degree, a class A misdemeanor.

The arrest followed a New York State Police underage drinking initiative July 3 in Jefferson County that checked 15 businesses for compliance with state alcoholic beverage control laws.

Investigators used plainclothes members and underage operatives who were prohibited from lying about their age or presenting false identification if asked.

One business was found not in compliance after an alcoholic beverage was sold to an 18-year-old operative.

Paul J. Bailey, of West Carthage, was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Village of West Carthage Court at a later date.

The following 14 businesses were found in compliance: Kinney Drugs in Carthage; Dollar General in Carthage; Dollar General in Carthage; Circle K in Carthage; Johnson Corner Mart II in Carthage; Twin Village Liquors in Carthage; Stewart’s Shops in Carthage; Dollar General in Great Bend; Stewart’s Shops in Great Bend; Stewart’s Shops in Black River; Dollar General in Black River; Stewart’s Shops in Evans Mills; Route 11 Wine & Liquor in Evans Mills; and Sunoco in Evans Mills.

The New York State Police commend these businesses for their diligence and commitment to preventing underage drinking.
