CHARLTON, NY — The Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the unsolved homicide of Betty Conley, 37, who was murdered during the early morning hours of July 8, 1993, while working at the XtraMart gas station formerly located at 1958 state Route 67.
At approximately 3 a.m., Conley was found deceased inside the store.
She had suffered a single gunshot wound to the head.
Investigators determined that a quantity of U.S. currency had been stolen from the cash register during the incident.
Witnesses reported seeing a mid-1980s white sedan, possibly a four-door model, parked in the business’ lot around the time of the homicide.
The vehicle was described as having rust on the driver’s side door that was partially covered with primer.
Investigators also identified a person of interest described as a white male, approximately 6 feet 2 inches tall, 30 to 35 years of age, with a medium build, clean-shaven, and shoulder-length blond hair.
He was reportedly wearing a peach-colored tank top and was observed in the area at the time of the incident.
More than three decades later, this investigation remains active.
Advances in forensic science and renewed public attention continue to provide opportunities to generate new leads.
The Sheriff’s Office encourages anyone who may have information—no matter how insignificant it may seem—to come forward.
Even the smallest detail could prove critical in helping investigators identify those responsible and bring long-overdue justice to Conley and her family.
