HOOSICK, NY — State Police have identified a woman who drowned while swimming in the Hoosic River as Janice Ganz, 42, of Albany.
The investigation revealed Ganz had been swimming with her child on June 27 when an unexpected current caused the two swimmers to become distressed.
Ganz assisted in getting her child to safety but went under the water and did not resurface.
At about 7:02 p.m. June 27, troopers responded to the area of State Route 67 near the intersection of Beck Road for the report of an unaccounted swimmer.
A search of the water by first responders located Ganz deceased nearby.
State Police were assisted at the scene by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office, Hoosick Falls Police Department, Hoosick Regional EMS, the Cambridge Valley Rescue Squad, Johnsonville Volunteer Fire-Rescue & EMS Company, Buskirk Volunteer Fire Department, and the Easton Volunteer Fire Company.
The investigation is ongoing.
