Phone scam targets residents in Greenville

1 min read

GREENVILLE, ME — Police are warning residents about a phone scam in which callers are impersonating Greenville police officers.

The Greenville Police Department said scammers are using the department’s business phone number and the names of actual officers to contact community members.

The callers claim there are arrest warrants for the victims related to the purchase of materials allegedly used to manufacture illegal drugs, according to police.

The scammers then attempt to obtain credit card information or demand payment of “bail” to avoid arrest, police said.

Police said law enforcement agencies do not call people to collect bail payments, request credit card numbers or demand money to avoid arrest.

Residents who receive such calls should hang up immediately, not provide any personal information and report the incident to local law enforcement, police said.

Police advised residents to never provide personal, banking or credit card information to anyone over the phone unless they are certain they are speaking directly with their financial institution or another verified organization.
