SOUTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, PA — A 61-year-old man has been charged with assault and other offenses following an alleged road rage incident in the Shady Lane Road Tunnel on May 16, 2026.
Raymond Cupinski, of Plymouth, was arrested after an investigation into a confrontation involving an 81-year-old woman traveling through the one-lane tunnel.
Police were dispatched after receiving reports of a disturbance involving two vehicles inside the tunnel.
Investigators determined that Cupinski allegedly failed to yield the right-of-way and entered the tunnel from the opposite direction.
Cupinski exited his vehicle and approached the victim’s car, according to police.
Witness statements and video evidence allegedly show the suspect striking the victim’s vehicle multiple times, using force against the driver’s side door, verbally threatening the victim, and physically assaulting her.
The victim reported being struck in the head several times during the confrontation.
A witness who observed the incident remained on scene and later provided video footage to investigators.
Additional surveillance footage from nearby locations assisted in identifying the suspect vehicle and its operator.
Cupinski faces charges including terroristic threats, simple assault, harassment, disorderly conduct and traffic-related offenses.
Detectives from the Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office, in collaboration with the Hanover Police Department, assisted the South Abington Police in the apprehension of Cupinski.
Cupinski was arraigned by Magistrate Paul Keeler and remanded to the Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail.
