Woman arrested on DUI, child cruelty charges in Ryegate

RYEGATE, VT — State Police arrested a woman on DUI and child cruelty charges following a single-vehicle crash on Scott Highway on June 8.

Sarah Higgins, 33, of Wells River, was traveling east on Scott Highway south of Pinehurst Road when her 2009 GMC Acadia struck a guardrail on the south side of the roadway at 10:50 p.m.

Higgins was uninjured but showed signs of impairment, police said.

A 2-month-old child and a 2-year-old child were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Higgins was taken into custody and transported to the St. Johnsbury Barracks for processing.

She was released on a citation charging her with DUI and two counts of cruelty to a child.

The vehicle was totaled in the crash.

Weather conditions were clear and the road was dry at the time of the incident.

Higgins is scheduled to appear in Caledonia County Superior Court-Criminal Division on June 29.
