TORREY, NY — New York State Police are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred June 5, 2026, in the town of Torrey, Yates County.
At approximately 11:39 a.m., a 1999 white Sterling dump truck, operated by a 38-year-old Penn Yan man, was traveling eastbound on State Route 54.
The preliminary investigation determined that the unloaded dump truck braked abruptly after encountering an uninvolved vehicle ahead that was attempting to make a left turn.
The operator of the uninvolved vehicle accelerated and avoided a collision.
The dump truck was unable to maintain its lane, crossed into the westbound lane, and struck an oncoming 2015 gray Chevrolet Silverado.
The 59-year-old operator and sole occupant of the Chevrolet Silverado was pronounced deceased as a result of the crash.
The dump truck operator was ejected.
EMS transported him to Geneva General Hospital, and he was later flown to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
The operator submitted to a preliminary breath test, which yielded negative results.
He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized.
Members of the New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit responded to the scene.
The roadway has been reopened, and the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
