ORISKANY, NY — An inmate at the Oneida County Correctional Facility has been charged with attempted assault following an altercation with a corrections officer, according to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol.
Road Patrol Deputies responded to the correctional facility on May 16, 2026, for a reported assault.
A corrections officer had been assaulted following an altercation with an inmate within one of the housing units in the jail.
Inmate Jason Johnston, 43, of Rome, was ordered by a corrections officer to secure to his cell due to being disorderly, and Johnston refused.
Johnston then struck the corrections officer with a closed fist and a struggle ensued.
The corrections officer was able to gain control of Johnston and await response from other corrections officers when Johnston was then placed in mechanical restraints and escorted to another housing unit.
The corrections officer was then taken to Wynn Hospital to seek treatment for minor injuries, was released later that night, and has since returned back to work.
The case was then turned over to a member of the Criminal Investigation Unit for further investigation.
On June 2, 2026, Johnston was arrested and charged with one count of attempted assault in the second degree, a class E felony.
Johnston is currently being held on other charges and was recently arrested on April 28, 2026, by a member of the Criminal Investigation Unit and charged with assault in the second degree, a class D felony, stemming from an altercation with another inmate at the correctional facility.
Johnston was turned back over to corrections staff to await arraignment in CAP Court at a later time.
