HAVERHILL, MA — A student at Pentucket Lake School discovered a suspicious item on school grounds believed to contain illegal substances, prompting police to remind families about the dangers of handling unfamiliar objects.
On May 28, 2026, the student found what appeared to be a balloon on school property and brought the item home.
Once at home, it was discovered that the balloon contained a substance authorities believe may be illegal narcotics.
Preliminary field testing produced inconclusive results, and additional professional laboratory testing will be conducted to determine the exact nature of the substance.
Law enforcement and school officials were then notified.
Police conducted an area check of the school grounds and surrounding property.
No additional suspicious items were located.
The item was safely secured and removed for further investigation.
At no time was there believed to be an ongoing threat to students or staff.
Police are encouraging parents and guardians to educate children about the risks associated with unknown substances or suspicious items.
Students should be encouraged not to touch, open, or handle unfamiliar objects and to immediately notify a trusted adult, school official, or law enforcement officer if something suspicious is found.
Anyone who encounters suspicious items or activity is urged to contact the Haverhill Police Department or local authorities immediately.
