WELLFLEET, MA — The Wellfleet Police Department is warning residents about an increase in fraud and scam reports.
Police said they have received multiple calls from residents reporting they have been victims of fraud or scams.
The department is urging residents to never give out personal information to anyone they don’t know.
Police are advising residents to keep personal information private, including passwords, credit card numbers and sensitive paperwork.
Residents using social networking sites should update privacy settings and avoid posting Social Security numbers or financial information, police said.
The department recommends registering phone numbers with the National Do Not Call Registry at donotcall.gov.
Police warn residents to avoid anyone guaranteeing financial aid for college or vocational school, especially if they require payment first.
Residents should obtain free credit reports at annualcreditreport.com and avoid lookalike sites that charge monthly fees, police said.
The department is warning about travel scams targeting students looking for low-cost vacations.
Police said residents should never give out personal information in response to emails claiming to be from banks or internet service providers.
Residents should verify employment services before paying money to companies offering job placement assistance, police said.
