NEWBURGH, NY — Police rescued a man threatening to jump from the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge on May 23, 2026.
The Beacon Police Department received a call reporting a man standing on the fence of the pedestrian walkway near the Newburgh side of the bridge.
Officers arrived and found the man on the eastbound span, standing on the top rung of the fence overlooking the river.
He was speaking to a female passerby who had stopped to help and was stating that he wanted to kill himself.
Officers quickly took hold of the man and brought him down from the fence to safety.
Officers from the Town of Newburgh arrived and the man was turned over to them for mental health evaluation.
The bridge is not patrolled by the City of Beacon Police Department, but officers respond to such calls due to their proximity.
