SPRINGFIELD, MA — Police arrested a man after seizing a loaded firearm equipped with a 50-round drum magazine.
Navon Kelly, 23, of Springfield, was taken into custody at approximately 10:20 p.m. Tuesday on Newland Street.
Members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit had been investigating Kelly for illegal possession of a firearm for the past week, according to police.
Detectives received information Tuesday that Kelly was in possession of a firearm and drum magazine.
Officers located Kelly on Newland Street Tuesday evening and attempted to detain him, but he fled on foot, police said.
Following a brief foot pursuit, detectives detained Kelly.
Inside Kelly’s backpack, detectives recovered a loaded firearm with a 50-round drum magazine and 18 bags of marijuana, according to police.
Kelly is charged with carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded large capacity firearm on a public way, and possession with intent to distribute a Class D drug.
