FALL RIVER, MA — A 19-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly fleeing from police and leading officers on a chase that ended at his residence.
Januel Medina, of Fall River, was taken into custody at approximately 3 p.m. after CAST detectives attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop on Bradford Avenue near Kennedy Park.
Detectives had received information earlier in the day that Medina was operating a vehicle in the area of Bay Street and was in possession of a firearm.
He was already the subject of an active investigation in which it was determined he does not possess a license to carry a firearm.
When detectives attempted to stop Medina’s vehicle as he was backing into a parking spot at Kennedy Park, he fled at a high rate of speed, nearly causing multiple vehicle accidents, according to police.
Medina drove to his residence on Sachem Street, where detectives, along with MCD detectives, patrol officers and officers working a detail in the area, located him in the rear yard.
A brief foot chase through back yards and over fences ensued before Medina was taken into custody without incident.
Police obtained a search warrant for the residence and property.
The search yielded a Glock 19 9mm handgun with a defaced serial number and a loaded 31-round extended magazine.
A loaded 17-round magazine was also found in the residence.
Medina was charged with failure to stop for police, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop or yield, carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, possession of a large capacity firearm, possession of a large capacity feeding device, possession of ammunition without an FID card and receiving a firearm with a defaced serial number.
