Cat owners search for missing pets after fire in Mariaville

MARIAVILLE, ME — A structure fire that spread into surrounding woods Friday evening has been ruled accidental and may have been caused by a lithium-ion battery, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The Mariaville Fire Department responded to 266 Peninsula Drive just after 6 p.m. for a reported structure fire.

Firefighters arrived to find the structure fully involved, with flames spreading into the wooded area surrounding the property.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to investigate the cause of the fire.

No occupants were home at the time of the incident.

Investigators reviewed camera footage and determined the fire originated in the attached garage area.

Officials believe a lithium-ion battery may have caused the blaze.

No injuries were reported.

Two cats remain missing.
