HOMER, NY — A Syracuse man delivering packages for Amazon was arrested on a drunken driving charge after crashing a delivery van and knocking down a utility pole Wednesday night.
New York State Police at Homer were dispatched by the Cortland County 911 Center for a crash on State Route 41A in the town of Homer around 9:11 p.m.
When troopers arrived, they found a male in an Amazon uniform on the shoulder of the roadway and a white van on its passenger side, off the roadway with live wires on top of the vehicle.
An investigation at the scene revealed that the driver of the van, Abel B. Negash, 28, of Syracuse, was westbound on 41A when the van struck a National Grid pole then went off the roadway and rolled onto its passenger side.
Negash was able to exit the van before first responders arrived.
Negash sustained a laceration to his hand and was treated by members from TLC Ambulance on scene but was not transported to a hospital.
While interviewing Negash about what happened, a trooper smelled an odor of an alcoholic beverage and observed characteristics associated with impairment.
Negash was asked to perform Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which confirmed impairment.
Negash was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated, a misdemeanor.
Negash was transported to SP Homer where his reportable B.A.C was .13%.
He was issued appearance tickets to the Homer Town Court on June 16, 2026, and turned over to a sober third party.
Troopers were assisted on scene by the Homer Fire Department and Ron’s towing.
