BINGHAMTON, NY — The Binghamton Police Department is warning residents about scam phone calls in which callers are impersonating police officers.
Police were alerted to the fraudulent calls in which the caller identifies themselves as a supervisor with the department in an attempt to obtain personal information, identity or money from potential victims.
In at least one case, the caller told a potential victim that an illegal purchase had been made using the victim’s credit card and attempted to obtain additional personal information.
The caller threatened criminal liability through an outside governmental agency when the victim refused to provide the requested information.
Police said the fraudulent calls are “cloning” or replicating a legitimate Binghamton Police telephone number.
The Binghamton Police Department will not require any member of the community to provide personal banking information, personal identification numbers such as a Social Security number, or demand any type of payment over the telephone.
Anyone who has been a victim or believes they have been a victim of the scam is asked to contact the Binghamton Police Detective Bureau at 607-772-7080.
