Teen cited after crash with sheriff’s van in Whitestown

WHITESTOWN, NY — A Deerfield teen was ticketed after a two-vehicle crash involving an Oneida County Sheriff’s Office corrections transport van on May 18, 2026.

Deputies responded to the area of Oriskany Boulevard and State Route 291 at around 4:22 p.m. for a reported motor vehicle accident with injuries, according to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol.

Benjamin Nelson, 18, of Deerfield, was operating a 2021 Jeep eastbound on Oriskany Boulevard when he failed to yield the right of way while attempting to make a left turn onto State Route 291, deputies determined.

Nelson struck the westbound corrections van on Oriskany Boulevard.

The van was driven by Correction Transport Officer Samantha Wright and accompanied by Transport Officer M. Spielmann.

Two incarcerated individuals were also inside the transport van.

All four occupants of the van were transported to area hospitals for minor injuries.

Nelson was issued a ticket returnable to Whitestown Town Court for a later date.

The Whitesboro Fire Department, COCVAC, Kunkel Ambulance, Whitestown Police Department, New York State Police, Delahunt Towing and Yorkville Auto Works assisted at the scene.
