POTSDAM, NY — A 20-year-old college student was killed after being struck by a vehicle that fled the scene early Friday morning.
Police responded to Pierrepont Avenue at approximately 3:37 a.m. for a report of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle.
Emily Mae Smith, of Greenville, was transported to Canton Potsdam Hospital where she was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the crash.
Smith was a student at State University of New York at Potsdam.
The suspect vehicle fled the scene immediately following the collision.
Through investigation, officers determined the vehicle was an older-model black Cadillac Escalade with front-end damage.
At approximately 7:25 a.m., officers located the suspect vehicle traveling on U.S. Route 11 east of the village.
The operator, Jakob D. Krise, 18, of Brasher Falls, was taken into custody without incident.
Krise was charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash resulting in death, zero tolerance driving while intoxicated and driving across hazard markings.
He was arraigned in Town of Pierrepont Court and released under probation supervision.
Krise is scheduled to appear at Potsdam Town Court on May 20 at 12 p.m.
The investigation remains active and additional charges may be pending.
