BRANFORD, CT — Police are warning residents about scammers impersonating town officials and court personnel in an attempt to steal money.
The Branford Police Department said it has received several reports of someone pretending to be from the Town of Branford Planning and Zoning Department.
The suspect is requesting money be sent via wire to Fifth Third Bank through the Strip application, according to police.
Police said Planning and Zoning does not accept payment in this manner.
The suspect appears to be doing research, as the invoices being sent to potential victims involve work that required oversight or permits from Planning and Zoning, making it reasonable for someone to believe the payment request is legitimate, police said.
Police also received reports of text messages from “Connecticut District Court-Traffic Violation Summons” regarding unpaid traffic violations.
That is also a scam, according to police.
Branford residents who have provided funds to either of these scams may contact the department’s non-emergency line at 203-481-4241.
