GROVELAND, NY — A Groveland resident was arrested on a felony sexual abuse charge following a Livingston County Sheriff’s Office investigation, authorities said.
The investigation began March 31 into a possible sexual offense committed against a child in the town of Groveland, according to Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty.
Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division members investigated the allegations and determined that Derek Getman, 35, of Groveland, allegedly sexually abused a child younger than 11 years old, authorities said.
Getman was arrested May 12 upon his release from Attica Correctional Facility on unrelated charges, authorities said.
He was charged with one count of first-degree sexual abuse, a Class D felony.
Authorities said Getman is also a New York state registered sex offender.
Getman was taken to the Livingston County Jail for processing and pre-arraignment detention, according to the sheriff’s office.
He was later arraigned at the Livingston County Centralized Arraignment Part at the Livingston County Jail before Town of West Sparta Justice Mahany.
The judge remanded Getman to the custody of the sheriff without bail because he has two or more prior felony convictions, authorities said.
The Livingston County Public Defender’s Office represented Getman at arraignment.
The Livingston County District Attorney’s Office was notified and was present for the proceeding.
