NEW HARTFORD, NY — A dentist was arrested Tuesday following a multi-agency investigation into the prescribing of narcotics to patients not actively under his care.

Lawrence B. Marks, 76, of New Hartford, faces two counts of criminal sale of a prescription for a controlled substance by a practitioner and one count of falsifying business records in the first degree, according to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol.

The New York State Department of Health Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement began investigating Marks in January after receiving information he was prescribing and over-prescribing narcotics to patients he was not actively treating.

The Drug Enforcement Administration and the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office joined the investigation in April.

Investigators from all three agencies went to Marks’ dental practice on May 13 and gathered additional information before making the arrest.

The two prescription sale charges are Class C felonies, while the falsifying business records charge is a Class E felony.

Marks was transported to the Sheriff’s Office for processing and held at the Oneida County Correctional Facility pending arraignment in CAP Court.
