NEWPORT, RI — The Newport Police Department responded to Newport Hospital on May 9 after the facility received a threatening phone call.
At 3:50 p.m., hospital staff notified police that an unknown male caller had threatened to “shoot the place up” with a rifle at 4:00 p.m.
Multiple Newport Police officers were immediately dispatched to the scene.
Rhode Island State Police troopers monitoring police radio frequencies also responded to assist.
The hospital went into lockdown following its protocol.
Officers and troopers were stationed at hospital entrances.
Police determined there was no credible threat to the hospital, patients, staff or the general public.
The hospital began scaling back its lockdown procedures.
A uniformed Newport Police officer will remain stationed at the hospital as a precaution.
The incident remains under investigation.
