DRACUT, MA — A 50-year-old Lowell man will be summonsed to court to face reckless and intoxicated driving charges in connection with an incident that included two crashes and a pursuit on Merrimack Avenue.
On May 2, at approximately 5:30 p.m., police were called to the parking lot of a liquor store on Merrimack Avenue to conduct a well-being check on an individual in a black Land Rover Discovery who was potentially driving while intoxicated.
Dracut Police responded and while en route located a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Merrimack Avenue and Camden Street, with a black Land Rover Discovery repeatedly backing up, moving forward, and colliding with the other vehicle.
As police approached, the Land Rover fled toward Lowell on Merrimack Avenue, reaching speeds of over 65 mph.
Police pursued the Land Rover for about a mile when it rear-ended a pickup truck travelling in the same direction on Merrimack Avenue and came to stop.
Police immediately began providing first aid to the drivers involved and requested assistance from Dracut Fire and Pridestar Trinity EMS at both scenes.
The driver of the Land Rover was taken to Lowell General Hospital for treatment of injuries.
The other two drivers were transported to the hospital for evaluation.
As a result of a subsequent investigation, Dracut Police plan to summons the Lowell man into Lowell District Court to face charges of reckless operation, operating under the influence of drugs, leaving the scene of a property damage crash, failure to stop for police, marked lanes violation, and speeding.
