ROME, NY — A Vermont man has been arrested in connection with a government impersonation fraud scheme that targeted a local resident.

Musa Ahmed, 26, of Putney, was arrested Monday on a charge of attempted grand larceny in the second degree.

The arrest was made by the Rome Police Department Detective Division with assistance from the New York State Police Violent Gang and Narcotics Enforcement Team and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The case stems from an investigation that began in the fall of 2025 after a complaint was filed with Rome police on April 12.

Police say Ahmed attempted to steal a large sum of money from the victim through fraudulent activity.

Ahmed is accused of participating in an online and telephone scam in which multiple people impersonated government officials to extort funds from the victim in the form of gold bars and coins.

Ahmed was processed at the Rome Police Department and transported to the Oneida County Jail for the Centralized Arraignment Process.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be filed.
