STAMFORD, CT — Stamford police are continuing to investigate a fatal crash involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian that occurred at about 2:04 p.m. Saturday at Strawberry Hill Avenue and Colonial Road.

Police said a 2014 Toyota pickup truck driven by a 50-year-old Stamford resident was traveling southbound on Strawberry Hill Avenue and made a left turn to head eastbound on Colonial Road.

At the same time, Evelyn Aponte, 66, of Stamford, was crossing the southbound side of Colonial Road in a marked crosswalk, police said.

Aponte was taken to Stamford Hospital in critical condition and died there in the early morning hours of Sunday, April 26.

The driver remained at the scene and spoke with responding officers, police said.

Police said the driver was issued an infraction at the scene for failure to grant the right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

No other charges have been filed, police said.

The department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad is continuing the investigation and will determine with the Stamford State’s Attorney’s Office whether additional charges are warranted.

Police said the driver’s identity is not being released at this time because the investigation is active.

The crash is being investigated by Sgt. Jeffrey Booth and Officer Lindsey Yanicky.
