MILFORD, MA — A Milford man was arrested early Monday morning after allegedly attempting to steal a van from a Hayward Street residence.

The Milford Public Safety Communications Center received a 911 call at approximately 1:17 a.m. from a resident reporting her husband was confronting a male attempting to steal his van.

The caller informed dispatchers the suspect had fled on foot onto East Main Street as officers responded to the scene.

Officers located a male matching the caller’s description near the intersection of East Main and Plain streets at 1:26 a.m.

Cristian Romero, 24, of Milford, was placed under arrest following an on-scene investigation.

Multiple victims in the area came forward in the hours following the arrest, reporting larcenies and entries into their vehicles during the night.

“Officers responded quickly as the report of the vehicle owner struggling with the suspect came into our communications center,” said Milford Chief of Police Robert Tusino.

“I’m thankful that our officers were able to safely capture the suspect before any more homes or vehicles were burglarized,” Tusino said.

Romero was charged with breaking and entering a building at nighttime for felony, two counts of breaking and entering a vehicle or boat at nighttime for felony, larceny of a motor vehicle and disturbing the peace.

He was transported to Milford District Court for arraignment.
